How to beat Vellen, High Lord of Mammon

Getting there

Vellen waits on the lowest floor of the Royal Crypt, and the crypt is entered from the High Lord's Keep — the way in sits a little west of the courtyard beacon, tucked beside the arches at the back. The route down is one main path with side rooms off it.

Beating him is what opens the way to Lazlo, which makes this a Shell unlock filed as an optional boss — and Lazlo is the one Shell in the game carrying flat damage reduction, so an optional detour is holding the most forgiving body on the list.

How the fight is shaped

Under the title it is a bigger version of an enemy you have fought all through this region, dressed for the occasion. That is good news: everything you already do against a Confessor works here, and it never learns anything new.

The arena is small and its scythe is long, so spacing is not really available as a strategy. Both sources arrive at the same conclusion from opposite directions — stay in, take the openings, and end it before the reach becomes a problem.

What to actually do

  1. Parry the overheadsIts combos are long and unhurried, which makes them the easiest chain in the region to answer cleanly, and the overhead swing is reported as the most reliable of them to time. Chain the defence rather than picking one swing out of the string.
  2. Watch the butt of the weaponThe one attack that comes out faster than the rest is the jab with the far end of the scythe when you are close. It is the move that catches people who have settled into reading the swings, and both sources name it.
  3. Statuses stickIt does not dodge and it does not reposition quickly, which makes it an unusually good target for anything that ticks — an infusion applied early runs for most of the fight without further attention.
  4. Do not get put in a cornerThe room is the hazard. Circle rather than retreat, because backing up in a space this size ends against a wall with a scythe already swinging.
