MercenarySword and ShieldOne-handed + shield

Blade Edge Mercenary

Sword and Shield has a state machine underneath it: hits build Sword Tip, six stacks flip you into Blade Edge, and Blade Edge makes everything hit harder. The whole build is about reaching that state sooner and leaving it later. Talents do the work here — three of them turn skills into stack generators, and one lowers the number of stacks the state costs.

Talents that matter4 trees back this branch

Not a full tree — these are the points that change what the build does rather than adding a percentage to it. Fill the rest of the tree in whatever order your level allows.

Affixes to roll for

In priority order. Affix rolls are random, so treat this as what to keep rather than what to expect.

  • StrifeOffensive

Straight melee weapon damage — the build's whole output goes through the sword.

  • BulwarkDefensive

You are carrying a shield and blocking on purpose; block damage reduction is not wasted here.

  • SeamlessUtility

The rotation is cooldown-bound, not resource-bound.

Sword and Shield weaponshighest combat value

Pulled from the catalog by combat value, not picked by hand — a new sword and shield shows up here on the next import.

How to play it

  1. Open with Impalement for the first two stacks, then normal-attack into Blade Edge rather than dumping skills.
  2. Once the state is up, spend Whirling Cut and Stonebreaker Slash — with the Edge talents these keep it alive instead of ending it.
  3. Block on reaction, not on prediction. Stonebreaker Slash is the safe answer to a committed swing.
  4. If the fight resets, do not chase. Re-open with Impalement; the state is cheap to rebuild and expensive to lose mid-chase.

Don’t take this if

You want burst. This build ramps — its damage lives in the state, and a fight that ends in three seconds ends before the state matters.

Every skill, talent, affix and weapon above is resolved from the imported catalog. The judgement — which picks and why — is ours, and it is not a tier ranking.
