MercenarySword and ShieldOne-handed + shield
Blade Edge Mercenary
Sword and Shield has a state machine underneath it: hits build Sword Tip, six stacks flip you into Blade Edge, and Blade Edge makes everything hit harder. The whole build is about reaching that state sooner and leaving it later. Talents do the work here — three of them turn skills into stack generators, and one lowers the number of stacks the state costs.
Skill bar4 of the branch’s skills
- Stacked SlashSword and Shield
The branch mechanic itself: normal attacks build Sword Tip and six stacks open Blade Edge.
- ImpalementSword and Shield
Two stacks per cast, so it is the fastest way into the state from a standing start.
- Whirling CutSword and Shield
A dash that closes and generates at once, and the talent tree behind it is the deepest in the branch.
- Stonebreaker SlashSword and Shield
Covers the block window while still adding stacks — the defensive half of the loop.
Talents that matter4 trees back this branch
Not a full tree — these are the points that change what the build does rather than adding a percentage to it. Fill the rest of the tree in whatever order your level allows.
- Sword EdgeWeapon Mastery
Sword skills also grant Sword Tip, which is what turns the loop from normal-attack-only into a real rotation.
- Stacking BladeWeapon Mastery
Fewer stacks needed for Blade Edge and Strong Edge — the single highest-value point in the branch.
- Blade ChargeWeapon Mastery
The payoff: Sword and Shield attacks deal more while the state is up.
- Whirling EdgeWhirling Cut Enhancement
Whirling Cut both feeds the state and hits harder inside it.
- Stonebreaker EdgeStonebreaker Slash Enhancement
Same for Stonebreaker Slash, so your defensive option is not a damage hole.
Affixes to roll for
In priority order. Affix rolls are random, so treat this as what to keep rather than what to expect.
- StrifeOffensive
Straight melee weapon damage — the build's whole output goes through the sword.
- BulwarkDefensive
You are carrying a shield and blocking on purpose; block damage reduction is not wasted here.
- SeamlessUtility
The rotation is cooldown-bound, not resource-bound.
Sword and Shield weaponshighest combat value
Pulled from the catalog by combat value, not picked by hand — a new sword and shield shows up here on the next import.
How to play it
- Open with Impalement for the first two stacks, then normal-attack into Blade Edge rather than dumping skills.
- Once the state is up, spend Whirling Cut and Stonebreaker Slash — with the Edge talents these keep it alive instead of ending it.
- Block on reaction, not on prediction. Stonebreaker Slash is the safe answer to a committed swing.
- If the fight resets, do not chase. Re-open with Impalement; the state is cheap to rebuild and expensive to lose mid-chase.
Don’t take this if
You want burst. This build ramps — its damage lives in the state, and a fight that ends in three seconds ends before the state matters.
